Getting to Know You

Who said that God doesn't have a sense of humor! On June 30, in a remarkable juxtaposition of celestial and terrestrial developments, the United States (in partnership with both old and new Europe) will complete an exchange of ambassadors with the dimension of cosmic mind that astrologers describe as Saturn. As readers of Human Potential Left are doubtless aware, transiting Saturn has been paying special attention to the charts of the U.S. and President Bush ever since mid-October 2003. After completing its apparent retrograde motion, Saturn returned to the exact zodiacal position of the United States natal Sun on/around June 9th (depending on the specific chart for the United States that one uses). It definitively arrived at the position of President Bush's natal Sun on June 15th. It is likely to continue to exercise a sobering influence on both through the end of their respective solar years (which will commence with their birthdays on July 4th and July 6th, 2004).

Tonight, this unprecedented ambassadorial exchange will be completed when the Cassini spacecraft – a joint American-European collaboration, having endured a journey of nearly seven years in duration, and some two billion miles – passes through a gap in the rings of Saturn, and begins a scheduled four year orbit of the planet.

Let us sincerely hope that this symbolism heralds a renaissance for a nation originally founded on principles like:

– a detailed, written constitution (the very first in human history),
– separation of powers,
– separation of church and state,
– an abhorrence of international adventurism,
– an emphasis on education as the foundation for enlightened government,
– an advocacy for meritocracy as the primary instrument of social advancement,
– a dedication to the conception that America was to be a nation of laws, and not a nation of powerful men.

Each of these principles is inescapably connected with the symbolism that astrologers would associate with Saturn – both in its pristine, archetypal form, and its more particular expression, as embodied in any July 4, 1776 United States chart.

Let us further hope that this unique collaborative effort, launched during the Clinton Administration, comes to be seen as a demonstration in the realm of space and time – which is Saturn's realm, I should add – that the United States is just that much more effective, in every way, when it acts in concert with friends.
